All Systems Red Audiobook Review
Murderbot’s first outing is funny, tense, and one of the safest short-list recommendations for science-fiction listeners.
A little more about the listen
Martha Wells gives us a security android that would rather watch serial dramas than interact with the humans it has been hired to protect. That deadpan perspective makes the danger more entertaining, but the novella also has a real emotional engine: Murderbot is trying to decide what freedom and responsibility mean on its own terms.
The listening experience
Kevin R. Free’s narration is the perfect match for the internal voice—dry, observant, and never overplayed. The performance keeps the action clear while making every reluctant flash of concern land properly.
Best for
A fast, character-led science-fiction listen with a strong hook.
The honest note
Its compact length is part of the appeal, but this is the beginning of a series rather than a huge standalone saga.
Worth considering for a fast, character-led science-fiction listen with a strong hook. The honest note is the deciding reservation to weigh before spending a credit: Its compact length is part of the appeal, but this is the beginning of a series rather than a huge standalone saga.
