The Hunting Party Audiobook Review
A New Year’s gathering in a snowbound Scottish lodge becomes a classic closed-circle murder mystery with five narrators and nowhere to escape.
A little more about the listen
The Hunting Party is the most overtly classic mystery of Foley’s three major audio thrillers. Old university friends gather at a remote Scottish lodge, a blizzard closes the roads and one of the guests is dead before the holiday is over. The setting does familiar work, but the social history between the guests gives every conversation a second meaning.
The listening experience
Gary Furlong, Elle Newlands, Morag Sims, Imogen Church and Moira Quirk turn the competing accounts into a natural ensemble. The voices help distinguish the friends, staff and shifting points of view, while the snowbound setting gives the production a cold, enclosed atmosphere. It is a good example of format serving premise rather than merely adding more performers.
Best for
Listeners who want an atmospheric snowbound whodunit, ensemble narration and a modern answer to the classic isolated-house mystery.
The honest note
Some character types and social tensions are deliberately familiar, and the audiobook rewards atmosphere and suspicion more than radical reinvention of the genre.
Worth considering for listeners who want an atmospheric snowbound whodunit, ensemble narration and a modern answer to the classic isolated-house mystery. The honest note is the deciding reservation to weigh before spending a credit: Some character types and social tensions are deliberately familiar, and the audiobook rewards atmosphere and suspicion more than radical reinvention of the genre.
