Harry Potter did something that very few books manage to do. It made you feel like the world inside the pages was more real than the one outside. You knew the corridors of Hogwarts. You felt the weight of every loss. And when it was over, you did not want to leave.
The good news is that the feeling Harry Potter gave you — that total immersion in a world with its own rules, its own magic, and characters you would follow anywhere — is not unique to Rowling. There are other books that do it. And on audio, with the right narrator, they do it just as powerfully.
These five audiobooks were chosen because they each capture something essential about what made Harry Potter special: a young protagonist discovering their place in a hidden world, magic that feels genuinely wondrous, and a sense that the stakes are real. All five are available on Audible, and any of them makes an excellent first listen on your current Audible offer.

If Harry Potter is the British boarding school version of the chosen one story, Percy Jackson is the American summer camp version — and it is every bit as addictive. Percy is twelve years old, has ADHD and dyslexia, and has just been told he is the son of a Greek god. The world he thought he knew turns out to be layered over a hidden world of monsters, Olympians, and ancient prophecies.
Jesse Bernstein's narration on Audible captures Percy's voice perfectly — wry, quick, and genuinely funny. Riordan writes with the same propulsive energy as Rowling, and the mythology is woven in so naturally that you absorb it without noticing. This is the series that turned a generation of children into mythology obsessives.

This is the book that Harry Potter fans who are ready for something more complex tend to discover in their late teens or early twenties — and it hits like a revelation. Kvothe is a legend. The story is him, now an innkeeper hiding in obscurity, telling the true story of how he became that legend. It is a story about a boy who is the most gifted student his university has ever seen, who is desperately poor, and who is searching for the people who killed his family.
Nick Podehl's narration is widely considered one of the finest in fantasy audiobooks. His voice for Kvothe is warm, intelligent, and quietly magnetic. The magic system — sympathy, naming, the Alar — is the most original in modern fantasy. If you loved the sense that Hogwarts was a place you could actually learn something, Rothfuss's University will feel like coming home.

Christopher Paolini was fifteen years old when he began writing Eragon. That fact alone is remarkable. What is more remarkable is that the book he wrote — about a farm boy who finds a dragon egg and is drawn into a war between the Riders and a tyrannical king — is genuinely gripping. It has the bones of a classic: a mentor who dies too soon, a rebellion that needs a hero, and a bond between a boy and his dragon that is one of the most moving relationships in fantasy.
Gerard Doyle's narration is measured and authoritative, giving the Inheritance Cycle the weight of an epic. For Harry Potter fans who want dragons, a hidden world of magic, and a young protagonist discovering powers they barely understand, Eragon is the natural next step.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy begins with The Golden Compass, and it is one of the most ambitious fantasy novels ever written for young readers. Lyra Belacqua lives in a world parallel to ours, where every human has a daemon — an animal companion that is the external expression of their soul. When children begin disappearing, Lyra sets out to find them, and discovers that the world is far stranger and more dangerous than she knew.
The full-cast Audible production is extraordinary — a complete theatrical experience with music, sound design, and a cast that includes some of Britain's finest actors. Like Harry Potter, The Golden Compass is a book about a child who discovers they are at the centre of something enormous. Unlike Harry Potter, it is also a book that asks genuinely difficult questions about authority, religion, and what it means to be free.

This is the most unusual recommendation on this list, and possibly the most rewarding. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is set in an alternate Napoleonic England where magic once existed and has now returned. Two magicians — one a reclusive scholar, one a brilliant improviser — become rivals, allies, and eventually enemies as they try to restore English magic to its former glory.
Simon Prebble's narration is impeccable — dry, precise, and deeply English in a way that perfectly suits Clarke's prose, which reads like a Victorian novel written by someone who has read too much Tolkien and Dickens and is entirely fine with that. This is the book for Harry Potter fans who want magic treated as a serious, strange, and slightly dangerous thing — the way Rowling always implied it was, but never quite showed.

🎧 Listen to Jonathan Strange on AudibleIf you want something that feels most like Harry Potter — same age group, same pace, same sense of humour — start with Percy Jackson. It is the most direct successor to the Rowling tradition.
If you want something that captures the magic of Hogwarts as a place of learning — the sense that there is a whole system of knowledge to master — start with The Name of the Wind. Rothfuss's University is the closest thing in fantasy to Hogwarts for adult readers.
If you want something that matches Harry Potter's ambition — a story that is genuinely about something, not just a plot — start with The Golden Compass. Pullman is writing about the biggest questions there are, and he does not flinch.
All five are available on Audible. Any of them is an excellent first listen on your current Audible offer — and you get to keep the first one even if you cancel.
