Best Tolkien Audiobooks — The Complete Listening Order

How this recommendation was formed: We research narrator and production details, audiobook length, series context, ratings, reviews and listener feedback. “Worth the credit?” is a curator recommendation based on that evidence, not a claim of personal listening. Read our approach.

J.R.R. Tolkien created the template for modern fantasy — and his books have been available as audiobooks for decades. But the question of where to start, and in what order to listen, is less obvious than it seems. This guide covers every major Tolkien audiobook, ranked and ordered for the best listening experience.

The Narrator Question

Unlike Brandon Sanderson, Tolkien's catalogue has been recorded by multiple narrators across different editions. The two that matter most are Rob Inglis, who narrated The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings for Recorded Books, and Andy Serkis, who recorded a newer version of The Hobbit in 2020. Both are excellent — but they are very different experiences.

Rob Inglis is the traditional choice: a solo performance where he voices every character, sings every song, and brings a quiet, scholarly warmth to the text. Andy Serkis is more theatrical, with a wider vocal range and a slightly faster pace. Most long-time Tolkien listeners prefer Inglis. Most newcomers find Serkis more immediately engaging.

1. The Hobbit — Start Here, Always

The Hobbit audiobook cover narrated by Rob Inglis

The Hobbit is the right starting point regardless of whether you plan to continue to The Lord of the Rings. It is shorter (11 hours), lighter in tone, and introduces the world of Middle-earth without the weight of the full mythology. Bilbo Baggins is recruited by the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves to help reclaim a mountain kingdom from a dragon — and the adventure that follows is one of the most beloved stories ever written.

The Rob Inglis narration is the gold standard. His performance of Gollum's riddle game is alone worth the listen. The Andy Serkis version (2020) is also excellent if you prefer a more modern, cinematic feel.

2. The Fellowship of the Ring — The World Expands

The first volume of The Lord of the Rings is where Tolkien's world deepens dramatically. The tone shifts from the cosy adventure of The Hobbit to something darker and more mythological. Frodo inherits the One Ring and must leave the Shire — and the journey that begins here will take three volumes and approximately 55 hours of listening to complete.

Rob Inglis narrates all three volumes of The Lord of the Rings in a single continuous performance. His reading of the Old Forest, the Mines of Moria, and Lothlórien are among the finest passages in audiobook history. The pacing is slow by modern standards — Tolkien wrote slowly and Inglis reads him that way — but for listeners who surrender to it, the experience is unlike anything else.

3. The Two Towers & The Return of the King

The second and third volumes complete the story. The Two Towers splits the Fellowship and follows two parallel storylines — Frodo and Sam's journey toward Mordor, and the war unfolding across Rohan and Gondor. The Return of the King brings everything to its conclusion in one of the most emotionally devastating endings in literature.

Inglis narrates both with the same consistency and care as the first volume. The Battle of Pelennor Fields, the Paths of the Dead, and the Scouring of the Shire are all given full weight. Together, the three volumes run approximately 55 hours — a remarkable achievement for a single narrator.

4. The Silmarillion — For the Devoted

The Silmarillion audiobook cover

The Silmarillion is not a novel. It is the mythology of Middle-earth — the creation of the world, the wars of the First Age, the stories that The Lord of the Rings only references in passing. It is dense, biblical in tone, and not recommended as a starting point. But for listeners who have finished The Lord of the Rings and want to understand the full depth of what Tolkien built, it is essential.

Martin Shaw narrates the audiobook version with a gravitas that suits the material perfectly. At 14 hours, it is shorter than any of the main books — but it rewards slow, attentive listening rather than background play.

The Recommended Listening Order

For most listeners, the best order is publication order: The Hobbit first, then The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Save The Silmarillion for after you have finished the main trilogy — it will mean far more once you know the story it is contextualising.

If you are using Audible credits, start with The Hobbit on your free trial. If you love it, the three Lord of the Rings volumes are each worth a credit. The Silmarillion is a bonus for those who want to go deeper.
